Sodium and potassium in food, beverages and water

Israel's red front-of-pack warning labels made sodium a number every food manufacturer must get right. A BWB flame photometer measures Na, K and Ca together in food digests, beverages and water in seconds — and the BWB SUGAR model does it online, 24/7.

Typical samples

Food — sodium and salt

Na for nutrition labelling and salt claims (salt = Na × 2.5), low-sodium and K-enriched products.

Beverages and dairy

Na, K and Ca in juices, soft drinks, sports drinks, milk and infant formula.

Mineral and drinking water

Labelled Na, K and Ca in bottled and tap water.

Desalinated water

Na and K monitoring in desalination product water and remineralisation.

Boiler feed and condensate

Online Na/K to detect sugar or process carry-over before it reaches the boiler.

Sugar, wine and fermentation

K in juices and syrups, Na/K in wine and fermentation media.

Why BWB

Why food and water labs use BWB

  • Simultaneous Na, K, Ca. All three from one aspiration; Ba too on the XP.
  • Fast QC release. A stable reading in under 15 seconds after warm-up — results on the production line, not tomorrow.
  • Simple to run. Step-by-step prompts, auto-read and operator-independent results — suitable for shift operators.
  • Online 24/7. The BWB SUGAR takes a continuous sample feed and outputs 4–20 mA and RS232 to SCADA.
  • Traceable reports. FP-PC software produces PDF and CSV reports for HACCP and ISO 17025 records.
  • Everything in the box — compressor, regulator, standards and labware. Just add propane.

FAQ

Common questions

Can a flame photometer measure sodium in food for labelling?

Yes. After dry ashing or digestion and dilution, sodium is measured directly by flame emission; salt is calculated as Na × 2.5. It is quick, inexpensive and well suited to routine QC.

Is it suitable for water analysis?

Flame emission is a standard technique for Na and K in water (for example ISO 9964-3 and Standard Methods 3500-Na B / 3500-K B), with detection limits of 0.03 ppm Na and 0.02 ppm K.

How does online condensate monitoring work?

The BWB SUGAR collection cup takes a continuous ~5 ml/min sample feed at ambient temperature. Potassium and sodium are measured continuously and sent as a 4–20 mA signal to your SCADA, which can trigger alarms or bypass valves.

Who supports BWB in Israel?

SciLab Ltd in Haifa is the authorised BWB Technologies distributor: sales, installation, training, calibration standards, spare parts and service.
