Flame photometry for clinical and biological samples

Flame photometry is the classic reference technique for sodium, potassium and lithium in body fluids — without the membrane drift, lipemic-sample errors and electrode costs of ion-selective analysers. The BWB BIO brings it up to date with user log-in, LIMS connection and full validation.

Typical samples

Typical samples

Serum and plasma

Sodium and potassium; calcium on the BIO.

Urine

Na and K in spot and 24-hour urine, with dedicated urine standards.

Lithium therapy monitoring

Serum lithium measured together with Na and K from the same dilution (BIO AV).

Research

Cell-culture media, physiology and animal studies, plant and microbiology research.

Pharmaceutical QC

Na and K in infusion, dialysis and oral rehydration solutions.

Teaching laboratories

A robust, easy-to-learn instrument for university and college courses.

Why BWB

Why laboratories choose the BWB BIO

  • Ready for body fluids. 5- and 6-point multi-ion calibration standards for serum and urine are included.
  • No electrodes to replace. No ISE membranes, no drift from lipemic samples, low running cost.
  • Data integrity. Access Control Technology: up to 20 users at three access levels, results traced to user IDs.
  • LIMS integration and four stored calibration methods on the BIO.
  • Validated. IQ/OQ/PQ kit included, with a signed manufacturer certificate after qualification.
  • Automation. Add the AFHS autosampler and auto-diluter for up to 89 samples unattended.

FAQ

Common questions

Flame photometer or ion-selective electrode?

ISE analysers are fast but rely on membranes that drift and need replacing, and lipemic or protein-rich samples can cause errors. Flame photometry measures the element itself, with stable calibrations and low running costs — which is why many labs keep it as their reference method for Na, K and Li.

Can the BIO measure lithium for therapy monitoring?

Yes. Li is measured together with Na and K; the BIO AV is optimised for Na, K and Li from a single dilution.

How is data integrity handled?

The BIO range offers Access Control Technology — individual user accounts with passwords and three access levels — plus LIMS integration and PDF/CSV reports from the FP-PC software.
